30 Day Challenge: Clean Eating; Days 1-10

This longform post is the first of 3 posts where London based student Valeriya Rodimova details her experiences of attempting to eat clean for 30 days. The posts will include dietary, fitness, and personal observations. The posts are brilliantly long and detailed but we will do a summary and cheat sheet when the 30 days is complete. Who is Valeriya?

My name is Valeriya Rodimova and I am ready to start my 30-day Eat Clean Challenge! I will tell some basic staff about me to start with. I am 20 and I am 2nd year Queen Mary University College London student. I am doing International Relations. I have been always keen on searching diets and not finishing them. Something has to be changed, as I might appear to be slim, however my skin, my hair and my health overall is dissatisfactory. So this challenge is an amazing opportunity for me to start new life!

Day 1: Stats

Today is 11th of October and I have measured myself this morning using measurement tape, weights and fat measurement calipers and the results are the following:.

  • Weight: 54 kg
  • Height: 160 cm
  • Waist: 61 cm
  • Hips: 91 cm
  • Thigh: 51 cm
  • Shin: 32 cm
  • Arm: 22 cm
  • Chest: 88 cm
  • Neck: 29 cm
  • Body fat percentage: 20,4%

Each day I am planning to do gym sessions. Before each training I am going to take a portion of L-carnitine which helps to burn fat. Today I have spent an hour on running track and I have lost 630 calories! (speed 6,3 km and incline 10%)

After gym I have prepared the food for the whole day. That’s how it looks.

Breakfast:

  • 150g of buckwheat 133,2 calories

Lunch:

  • 150g buckwheat 133,2 calories
  • 120g grilled chicken breast (no oil) 120calories
  • 100g courgette 17 calories

Dinner:

  • 160g grilled chicken breast (no oil) 160 calories
  • 130g cucumber 20 calories
  • 90g tomato 15 calories

Overall: 600 calories

Next day I am going to cook more as 600 calories are not enough for healthy eating but I am going to split the food for 5 portions.

Day 2

Today is 12th of October and I woke up in a perfect mood, however I had to be at my seminar at 10:00 and the time on my phone was 09:45… so I have almost missed everything but I have managed not to get into trouble. Thanks God I have cooked my food yesterday so I didn’t have to worry about it in the morning. Yesterday I have decided to have five but smaller portions instead of three and I have decided to add avocado to my rationn as avocado contains healthy fats and vitamins that are essential for smooth weight loss. Also I have ordered a package of food containers which I think will be very useful for my challenge as I will be able to bring my food everywhere with me.

So, my plan was:

Breakfast:

  • 100g buckwheat 90 calories

2nd Breakfast

  • 100g buckwheat 90 calories
  • 100g grilled chicken breast(no oil) 100 calories
  • 50g    courgette 10 calories

Lunch:

  • 150g buckwheat 133,2 calories
  • 100g grilled chicken breast(no oil) 100 calories
  • 50g courgette 10 calories
  • 2nd Lunch or Pre-dinner
  • 100g grilled chicken breast 100 calories
  • 60g cucumber 10 calories
  • 50g tomato 10 calories
  • 25g avocado 40 calories

Dinner:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 100 calories
  • 60g cucumber 10 calories
  • 50g tomato 10 calories
  • 25g avocado 40 calories

Overall: 850 calories

However, I had my breakfast only at 10:00 am I was eating it on the train station (that’s what I meant above that food containers are very useful) My whole timetable was slightly ruined as I have planned to have my breakfast at 08:00, so I have managed to eat only four portions out of five and it means that I don’t have to cook dinner for tomorrow! So my calories intake for today was 700 calories.

When I came home I took a portion of L-carnitine to prepare for my gym session. Each day I alternate my exercises: for example yesterday I was doing cardio and today I was working on my ABS and arms.

Day 3

Hey! It is my 3rd day of challenge and one third of challenge is completed! Some might say that it is funny to say this but that’s how I reach my goals! Even in a running track when only ten minutes has gone and so that means that fifty minutes are left, I am telling to myself: Hey, well done you have already done one sixth of your plan, was it hard? No! So let’s do these five remaining parts! Anyway 13th of October was much better than yesterday as I woke right on time and without any rush cooked my meals and packed them for uni. Today my menu was slightly different as I have added eggs (only whites), lentils and mushrooms (huge source of protein). However I have had some problem with cooking lentils, as what I got at the end was more like a lentils porridge, but I am pretty sure that it didn’t affect the taste of this superproduct.

So, my menu for a day was:

Breakfast:

  • 100g lentils 116 calories

2nd Breakfast:

  • 100g buckwheat 90 calories
  • 100g chestnut mushrooms 20 calories
  • 4 egg whites 80 calories

Lunch:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast(no oil) 113 calories
  • 50g lentils 60 calories
  • 100g courgette 20 calories

Dinner:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast (no oil) 113 calories
  • 60g cucumber 10 calories
  • 50g tomato 10 calories
  • 25g avocado 40 calories

Overall:672 calories

By the way I am cooking everything using a small grill, which is in my opinion essential for everyone who got an aim of weight loss, as it enables you to cook without any oil! Moreover, I do not add salt anywhere.

After uni I came back home and changed for gym session. Today was a cardio day, so my plan was to do 1 hour of running on the running track with the speed 6,3 km/h and with an incline 10%.  Oh, yes and as always I took a portion of L-carnitine 30 minutes prior to my training.

And I have managed to do it! I am red and sweaty but I am happy that I have done it! 638 calories burnt! Tomorrow my menu is going to be the same, except the white beans that I have been cooking today for 4 hours! (I am not joking) Tomorrow I ll try how it tastes.

Day 4

So 14th of October was my fourth day and I have already started to feel better. I am eating a lot in volume but not in calorie intake, each morning I wake up with a flat stomach (that I am really in love with) So, 14th of October was a busy day for me, but my 09:00am lecture was cancelled (thank God!). I have slept for a little bit longer than usual but still it was better than 06:30am alarm So first of all I will tell what was my menu for the day. I had only 3 meals cause I really didn’t have any time.

  • Dinner

Overall:469 calories

After I had my breakfast I have decided to go to the gym, I was supposed to do full body workout today. I took a portion of L-carnitine and you know what? I felt so energetic that I have decided to do 15 minutes on the running track! So I have burnt 160 calories even before my gym session started and I have already burnt my breakfast! My full body workout was really hard to me, to be honest, but I have completed it and with sense of pride for myself has gone home to finish my preparation for university seminar and to have my lunch.

I had my dinner on my way to my exciting job for the day. I was invited to be a Bavarian girl for an event where I had to dress in a traditional Bavarian dress and to carry the beer to the tables. It was an Oktoberfest in London. It was pretty hard for me cause my heels were to high but after two hours my manager allowed  me to change into flats and I became much happier. The guests on the event were so nice, that after my actual working hours have finished they invited me to sit with them and to have a pint of  beer:( So, on my 4th day I have already had prohibited product in my diet 😦

After the Oktoberfest I went to my friends who lived nearby and who had a house party and I had a glass of champagne and a small amount of whisky. But I have still have managed not to it any snack!

So, my calories intake increased a lot cause alcohol has a huge calorific value

Evening/night

  • 500g beer 215 calories
  • 50g whisky 125 calories
  • Champagne 88 calories
  • Overall:428 calories

Total Overall for the Day: 897 calories

So I got home only at 3 am in the morning and I still had to cook for myself as I had to wake up at 08:00 am for photoshoot of a new t-shirt brand! But I will tell you more about it in the next post!

Day 5

So today I woke up at 08:00 am with the terrible headache but I had to go to the photoshoot which was on other side of London and I was dedicated to do it! The photoshoot lasted for the whole day so I took all food containers with me so I am not missing any meal. I had four meals today. My menu was:

Breakfast:

  • 100g lentils 116 calories
  • 2nd Breakfast:
  • 50g white beans 51 calories
  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 100g courgette 20 calories

Lunch

  • 70g buckwheat 63 calories
  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 100g chestnut mushrooms 20 calories

Dinner:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 150 g tomato 30 calories
  • 110g cucumber 20 calories

Overall: 659 calories

The shoot was amazing and the people there were really interesting and fun. The idea of the photoshoot was an advertising of the new t-shirt brand which launches its own website in the next month. For the photoshoot we were pretending that we are having party with beverages, loud music and tonnes of pizza. I haven’t eaten anything of what was there on the table, so no worries. The photographs will be sent to us in two weeks and I will share them with you!

However, I didn’t have any time today for gym, but I think that one day off is fine for my weight loss journey. Tomorrow I feel like eating only grilled chicken and courgettes, so I won’t eat any carbohydrates – we will see how it goes!

Day 6

Hi everyone! Today is my Sixth Day of 30-Day Eat Clean Challenge and as I have already mentioned in the previous post I have decided to not to take any carbohydrates today. We will see how it goes but my menu for the day was extremely boring.

2nd Breakfast:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 100g courgette 17 calories

Lunch:

Dinner:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 100g courgette 17 calories

Overall: 520 calories

Exercise

Today was a really nice morning as it is Sunday and I don’t need to go anywhere. Except the gym of course!

Today is a cardio day, so again 1 hour on the running track.

I will be honest with you. It was REALLY hard for me today, when 40 minutes were left I thought I am gonna die. Every minute was like ten minutes, somehow I finished it, look at me – I can’t even smile.

However, I have burnt 657 calories (incline 10,5%; speed 6,3 km/h) which is more than my calorie intake today, so for sure I will lose some weight. I have decided not to use scales until day 15, then I will measure my mid-results.

After the gym I met my friend who came over from Russia just for a couple of days, and all the time after I have spent in the library. By the way that’s me on my way to uni!)

Day 7

Hey! Today is my Seventh Day of 30-Day Eat Clean Challenge and I feel really awesome! Today is Monday and it is the busiest day in my timetable and also I am not up to date with my studying so this week is going to be tough. But anyway! I should tell you my menu for today!

Breakfast:

  • 100g white beans 102 calories (but I have managed to eat only 50g, so 51 calories)
  • 2nd Breakfast:
  • 50g white beans 51 calories
  • 4 egg whites 80 calories
  • 100g mushrooms 20 calories

Lunch:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 50g white beans 51 calories
  • 100g courgette 20 calories

Dinner:

  • 100g grilled chicken breast 113 calories
  • 60g cucumber 10 calories
  • 50g tomato 10 calories

Overall: 519 calories

BUT! I am really disappointed in myself :

I didn’t go to the gym today when I was supposed to do leg exercises

I ate two chocolate doughnuts and two packs of crisps 😦

 254 calories*2 +88 calories*2 = 684  calories

I visited my friends and all of them were eating nice things and I really couldn’t do anything about it. But afterwards I have decided that it happened once and so I have to work on myself more so that doesn’t happen again.

Total Overall: 1203 calories ☹☹☹

But I will workout tomorrow for both days trust me!

Day 8

I just came from my photoshoot and as I told you yesterday I have decided not to eat today. And I didn’t eat anything, so there is nothing to tell you about my menu today. I had an amazing photoshoot with an awesome photographer and the photos will be in a funky style)

I'm not nutritionist but I would not recommend not eating for a day and I spoke to Valeriya about this but she assured me she was ok!

Total : 0 calories

But I have promised you and I have done it! I have done both workouts in the same day! So I have done one hour on the running track (incline 11%; speed 6,2 km/h) and I have lost 665 calories so I have paid off for my yesterday cheat meal.

And I have done the legs session that I was supposed to do on Monday, but missed. That was hard as cardio and legs in the same day is tough but that was because of my mistake yesterday, so now I am completely up to date. However, I haven’t done the skipping exercise out of these sixteen cause my skipping rope hasn’t arrived yet. Tomorrow I am going to try new pasta that I have ordered and I am really excited because I’ve  gotten really bored with white beans!

Day 9

I am so excited about tomorrow because you know what? Tomorrow is my 10th Day of the Challenge and I feel really great. But anyway I should tell you about my day. As I have spent the whole Monday doing nothing, I have ruined my week’s timetable and now I am trying to finish everything that I have missed on Monday.

So I have decided to go to the gym at 06:30am as today I had seminar at UCL which is really far away from my flat, so there was no point for me to come back to the gym and afterwards come back to the library again as I have got a lot of stuff to do. Usually I start my post from the menu for the day but today is gonna be different as my day has started from ABS and arms workout not from the breakfast. The first thing that I have ate today was the portion of L-carnitine. By the way this is how it looks like. I have tried many brands of L-carnitine but I like this one most. I have ordered mine from bodybuliding.com.

Day 10

Hey, hey, hey! Today is my 10th Day of 30-Day Eat Clean Challenge! I have done 1/3 of my journey, I can’t wait to measure myself but I will do it only after Day 15 as I have said.

So I woke up early in the morning for my lecture and…fell asleep and missed it. Fortunately enough I managed to wake up for my seminar. My menu for the day was the same as yesterday, however there was no pepper in my flat while I was cooking and as you remember I am not eating salt, so I had to add at least something to give a taste to chicken breast so I added coriander, and it was quite nice.

So my menu for the day was:

When I got back home I was so tired that I really felt that I have to sleep for a bit but I couldn’t fall asleep so I just spent some time chatting with my boyfriend via FaceTime. I felt too lazy to go to the gym but my boyfriend has motivated me to go there so I took a portion of L-Carnitine and went.

Today was a cardio day, so as always – 1 hour of running track. I was feeling so good, and I was quite happy about it as time was going really fast. BUT! At one monent I accidentally pressed stop and all my results were lost, and I have done only 40 minutes and I was so disappointed that I didn’t want to carry on, but anyway I burned 440 calories. Obviously I couldn’t take a picture of my progress on the running track, but at least you have got my photo.

Tomorrow I have decided to have different meals and you will be surprised but I have decided to try to eat only vegetables during the day! Let’s see how it goes.
