30 Day Challenge: Clean Eating; Days 1-10


This longform post is the first of 3 posts where London based student Valeriya Rodimova details her experiences of attempting to eat clean for 30 days. The posts will include dietary, fitness, and personal observations. The posts are brilliantly long and detailed but we will do a summary and cheat sheet when the 30 days is complete. Who is Valeriya?

My name is Valeriya Rodimova and I am ready to start my 30-day Eat Clean Challenge! I will tell some basic staff about me to start with. I am 20 and I am 2nd year Queen Mary University College London student. I am doing International Relations. I have been always keen on searching diets and not finishing them. Something has to be changed, as I might appear to be slim, however my skin, my hair and my health overall is dissatisfactory. So this challenge is an amazing opportunity for me to start new life!

30 Day Challenge: Tubing On The River Liffey

I’m currently in the process of moving house, starting back at school, starting a diploma/masters, settling my 20 month old into a crèche, minding a pregnant wife, and looking after the family farm as my Dad is laid up with an injury (*all these tasks may contain slight exaggeration and are very much my point of view). So when Inspirepod himself, Dave, called me and asked if I wanted to go tubing, of course I said YES.

A Tubing #Microadventure

I’ve mentioned in previous posts (exhibit a, and exhibit b) how much I love Alastair Humphrey and his #microadventures. One of my favourite chapters in his book was about a jaunt he and some of his mates took on an English river in truck inner tubes.

With this in mind I’m heading to Lucan with a few friends next week and seeing how far the river Liffey will take us in 2 hours. If you wanna join us get in touch and I’ll see about getting a spare tyre! Dave

Short Tale From A 5-9 #microadventure

This short post about our first official #microadventure was written by Damien Ward.

I set off for Tara Street station with a feeling of mild trepidation and my internal monologue running riot: ‘What exactly have I agreed to do?’; ‘Who else is going?’; ‘Wouldn’t I be better off at home watching Game Of Thrones?!?

I meet Dave and Steve and we head for Bray, picking up Mikey on the pier. Our leader in chief, Mr. Curran, sets a sprightly pace on the steep climb. The views at the top make my now sweat soaked body worthwhile – it’s a beautiful sunny evening and we can see for miles.  We spot a nice area to set up camp. Up go the tents.  A mound of firewood is collected. A bottle of Paddy is passed around. Not for the first time one of our party wonders out loud at the ease of it all.

30 Days Challenge 4: Sketching, Camping, Magic Trick

Our fourth 30 Days Challenge is shaping up to be my favourite so far. As usual our challenges break down like this (This month’s challenges in green);

  1. We each have to do one thing every day for as many of the 30 days as possible. Sketching
  2. We do one event/activity together during the 30 days. We’re going camping midweek and have to be back in time for work the next morning.
  3. We do one event/activity separately. We have to learn a magic trick and perform it for the other members of the group.

Inspired by my interview with Steve Doogan I’m loving the sketching challenge even though my attempts are pretty humble. We’re going camping on the 18th June and I haven’t been camping in about 20 years so I can’t wait. I’ve a brilliant card trick lined up but I’m not revealing what it is for obvious reasons.

30 Days Challenge (Cliona): Meditation, Dance, Street Art

I really want to be a meditator. I know this is something that I really need in my life. Manic Mannion, thats what they call me. Wherever the opposite is of calm, that’s where I live.  I’ve read tonnes of books on mindfulness meditation, have studied the scientific benefits of it with professors, have bought tons of ‘life-changing’ apps to do it, have alarms going on my phone reminding me to do it but although I’ve tried many times, I just can’t seem to stick with it. There’s some block.

The Challenge

Then Dave called.  “Alright Cli, wanna do a 30 day meditation with a group of us?”.  I met Dave only once before in a pub after some brief twitter chats. “Definitely“, I heard myself anxiously reply before wondering how I earth I would fit this into my already frenzied life.

This was it though. I truly believe people come into other peoples lives for a reason. And, Dave was here to turn me into a meditator.

30 Days Challenge (Niall) Meditation / Dance / Street Art

Our everyday challenge for the last 30 days was to meditate. I was looking forward to this as I’ve had a fair bit of “success” when it comes to meditation. I drifted into adult meditation about 5 years ago and found that it was something that came easy to me.

I realised that it wasn’t so much a new skill I was learning but revisiting something I used to do in childhood. Back then I called it “spacing out”. This could happen at home, in school and especially at Mass. Some of my favourite times as a child were spent “spacing out”. My favourite place to meditate was in the cab of my father’s cattle truck as it was parked somewhere in the middle of the countryside giving me a wonderful vantage point looking out over the high road hedges and into the fields and country lanes. My father would be in settling up and having a cup of tea or something stronger in the customer’s house, and I was left alone with the tick tock of the cab clock as my mantra. It was a wonderful gift of my childhood and I remember those times alone so fondly.

30 Days Podcast 3: Meditation, Jazz Dance, Street Art

The 30 Days Challenge is an attempt by myself and a few friends to do some of the things that we often talk about doing but never get done.  The idea is that we do 3 new things every 30 days.

This month our 3 challenges were:
  1. Meditate every day for 30 days.
  2. Learn how to do the Shim Sham dance.
  3. Make some Street Art.

As always, we had mixed results.  Join myself, the incredibly handsome Niall, the shockingly beautiful Jessie, and special guests Dave O’ Connor and Cliona Mannion as we discuss the third 30 days. Enjoy, Dave Curran.

This month our challenges are;
- Sketch something every day.
- Go on a midweek camping trick after work and get back in time to go to work the next day.
