Full-Moon Swim

Ah it was whopper. Thanks to Niall and Dave for agreeing to come. I know they secretly thought it was a barmy idea at first. But we were blessed with the night…gentle zephyrs and a supermoon spilling a glimmering path over the sea. It was pretty special out there at the swimming spot down below the Vico Road. Niall has written about it excellently, I like his invocation to Rán, the Norse Goddess of the Sea! Quinner and Dave are certainly the New Kings of the Vico. Suitable successors for the late Dermot Carey, RIP, a charming old-timer who taught me and Caraiosa and many other swimmers his method for not getting cold in the Irish Sea. It’s like the song Lanigan’s Ball, you step out and you step in again, and so on. You treat your skin as the animal pelt it is, curing it with short plunges in salty water followed by brisk towel rubbing and air-drying to absorb any lingering moisture. Just dance around waving your arms in between dips! And bring a flask of tea, we forgot that.

Floatation tank

The way Joe Rogan talks about floatation tanks you’d think they were a portal to another dimension.  Having just done my first I can agree that in a way, they are.  My float was one of the most interesting experiences I’ve ever had.  What follows is a description of my experience once I closed the door of the tank and turned off the light.

Gravity.  A force so strong we stay rooted to the planet and so weak my 2 year old can jump in the air.  Swimming and the occasional cliff-jump aside I’ve spent 99.99% of my time with some part of my body in contact with terra firma so it was disconcerting to find myself touching nothing except salt-laden water.  I felt lighter than a pickpockets touch.

Learning a languageScreen shot 2015-03-31 at 11.02.00

At the moment my baby girl is learning to talk and experimenting with language. It’s fascinating to hear her playing with sounds and language. I read that just being exposed to English for the last year has made it her main language and if she was move to a country where they speak a different language she would find it extremely difficult to learn the new language as she hadn’t been exposed to the sounds for the previous year.

So what are the chances of a 33 year old learning Italian in thirty days?  Very slim indeed. I gave it my best shot. I really did. I’m going to Italy this week and I really wanted to roll into town and wow my Italian friends with my new language. I used the Michel Thomas method and app.  The brilliance of the method is that it teaches you to think how Italians speak, retraining you linguistically. And it definitely works. I also watched a Ted Talk by Benny Lewis, an Irish polyglot. He reckons that the main barrier to learning a language is fear of making mistakes, and that you just need to show some neck and get talking to people and learn from your mistakes.

The 30 Days Challenge is an attempt by myself and a few friends to do some of the things that we often talk about doing but never get done.  The idea is that we do 3 new things every 30 days.

This month our 3 challenges were:
  1. Learn a language of our choice every day for 30 days.
  2. Go for a swim in the sea during the full moon.
  3. Do a floatation tank.
